Thursday, March 24, 2011     8:00pm - 9:00am

The recording for Unlock the Power of Stem Cell Biology & Assay Development with Your Microplate Reader is available now.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Different types of stem cells, including hematopoietic, neuronal, and cardiomyocytes
  • Use of stem cells for drug discovery
  • Discussion of stem cell differentiation and toxicity assays with different cell functions using Molecular Devices' Inc detection technologies

Presenters:

Oksana Sirenko, Ph.D., Research Scientist, Field Application Scientist, Molecular Devices, Inc

Yvonne Beirne FitzGerald, Field Application Scientist, Molecular Devices, Inc

Information:

The biopharma industry is continuing to adapt more cell-based assays for primary and secondary screening because of higher biological relevance and increased value of information.  There is a great interest in using stem cells as efficient screening tools in early drug development as well as for therapeutic purposes.  This webinar will provide an introduction to stem cell technologies including basics of stem cell biology, different types of stem cells and specific assays for monitoring expansion, differentiation, and development.

We will focus on three types of stem cells:  hematopoietic, neuronal, and cardiomyocytes.  Included will be an overview of label-free methods for monitoring expansion, and multiplexed fluorescence assays for differentiation.  Use of these methods to study the effect of biologics and chemical compounds on stem cell development will also be presented.  These methods have been optimized on a variety of imaging IsoCyteTM, ImageXpressTM Micro) and non-imaging (SpectraMax® Paradigm®, SpectraMax® M5 plate readers) instruments.  Combined with developed cell culture protocols, these assays allow efficient screening and validation of drug candidates as well as evaluating potential toxic effects of compounds early in drug development.
